The Police Are Moving Against The Occupation. Can A Flash Point Be At Hand?

The Police Are Moving Against The Occupation.

After a day in which 15 to 20,000 people marched peacefully in New York City, we are now entering a night in which police are cracking down, brutally, on the protest. As of 10 pm, there were reports on Twitter that the New York Police Department had barricaded the Occupy Wall Street headquarters in Zucotti park, were threatening arrests, and helicopters were hovering overheard.

What appears to have sparked the violence was a group of protesters who decided to stage a night-time march on Wall Street – this one, unlike the day’s protest, without permits. This may have greenlighted the cops to make arrests… by any means they deamed necessary.

Word coming out of NY is that more than 200 have been arrested. There is video showing police cubbing protesters with their batons:

It’s late, but not too late for injustice. San Francisco police have shown up in force to shut down San Francisco’s Occupy Wall Street encampment.
So much for “San Francisco liberal values”.

It looks like a large contingent – dozens of squad cars and Sixty Department of Public Works trucks (presumably to cart off tents and other offensive belongings), 4 street-cleaner trucks.

As I write this, news is coming in over twitter from OccupySF, Dymaxion, BadMonsanto, others:

·         DPW are tearing down the camp. Donations from all you beautiful people out there are being destroy
·         DPW removing occupation’s belongings under riot police guard:
·         Officer F. Hagan just said to a colleague, “hey, want to pull a Seattle right now?”
·         Police will probably move in late to clear stuff. I imagine a few arrests will happen overnight. #occupysf will be here tomorrow.
·         The police are throwing out medication belonging to members of the occupation.
·         people are blocking the trucks with their bodies and pallets of wood. “Block the trucks!”
·         Police are pushing people around. Just arrested somoneo and hit inb the chest after he was already down.
·         Correction, that was officer with helmet 682 who beat an unarmed and unresisting protestor who had followed his orders
·         And the obligatory brutality has begun… 3 police threw one of the #OccupySF kitchen down. He then received a baton to the face.

The police say the campers are in violation of city ordinances, and must leave immediately. Here’s the text of the letter they gave to the OWS protesters (as posted here and here):

Notice

The City and County of San Francisco and its police department celebrate and protect the right of an individual to engage in free speech and of the right to assemble. However, this encampment is a violation of the law. For those involved in the encampment at the Federal Reserve Bank, you are in violation of one or more of the following local ordinances or state laws:

·         Disorderly conduct-lodging in any building, structure, vehicle, or place, whether public or private (647(e) Penal Code)
·         Public nuisance 581 Health Code
·         Preparing or serving food without a permit
·         Permit required for temporary occupancy of the street and/or sidewalk
·         Civil sidewalk violations (168 MPC)

Accordingly, you are being ordered to take down this structure. Refusal to comply and/or obstruction of our efforts to remove the structure may result in your arrest.

The City’s homeless outreach team will provide, for those whop wish, support for shelter. The Department of Public Works will store your property if you do not have the means to take it with you.

As @nicoles tweeted:
Aw *fuck*, seriously San Francisco? You wait till 10PM to serve notice to #occupySF?!

OWS organizers are asking people to

1.      Come down and join the protest in San Francisco
2.    Contact city officials:
  • Mayor Ed Lee: (415) 554-6141
  • SF Board of Supervisors: (415) 554-5184
  • SF District Attorney: (415) 554-5184
Police in Seattle did the same thing earlier, as shown in this video. Tents and property were confiscated and those who resisted were arrested. In St Louis, the cops rousted camping Occupiers at 4:14 am.
